Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Roundup: Dec. 10, 2015

A look inside the second iteration of the Ice Bucket Challenge.

The Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum offers an occasional look at news and commentary about peer-to-peer fundraising. Here’s what caught our eye this week:

A Look Inside The Second ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’

Phil Haid, the co-founder of Public Inc. in Toronto, offers an interesting look at why the ALS Association’s efforts to host a second Ice Bucket Challenge didn’t meet expectations.

Haid details why he believes the second version of the campaign, which only raised about $500,000 (compared with the $115-million it raised in 2014), didn’t hit the mark.

But he ultimately applauds the ALS Association for working to build on the campaign.

“Even if Ice Bucket 2 didn’t work, the spirit of innovation and risk taking should be celebrated. Far too many charitable campaigns take the easy path, a path that usually leads to mediocrity,” Haid writes. “Generating large scale fundraising success and sustaining it is no easy feat. But with the right dose of courage, behavioral insight and execution it can be accomplished and repeated.”

A New Partner for Give Local America

Give Local America, the annual one-day crowdfunding event, will have a high-profile partner for the next five years.

Kimbia, the fundraising software company that plans the massive fundraising event, this week announced a five-year media partnership with Gannett Co., Inc., which will use its various media platforms to help Give Local America reach  more than 100 million consumers a month. In addition to promotions through USA TODAY and its 92 local news organizations, Gannett will provide support through sponsorship recruitment for the Give Local America crowdfunding event, which  raised $68 million for 9,000 nonprofits this year.
