At least 44 cause-related cycling rides raised more than $1 million each in 2017, according to a study by Cadence Sports and the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum.

This first-of-its-kind study goes deep into exploring individual events to disclose which rides were members of the “Million Dollar Club” which is topped by the Pan-Mass Challenge, a single weekend event that brought in a jaw-dropping $56.5 million in 2017.

“The cause-related cycling space is continuing to grow as more folks get on a bike and become engaged in an impactful mission – and not necessarily in that order,” said Gary Metcalf, President of Cadence Sports. “After this year’s Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum Conference, as a leader in the space, we felt it would be neat to see a larger snapshot of the most successful events in the country. We hope to expand on the report in the future.”

Topping the just-released Million Dollar Club list are 10 rides that have been dubbed “The Breakaway Group” for their industry-leading fundraising achievements.

They are:

  1. The Pan-Mass Challenge (Massachusetts) — $56.5 million
  2. Pelotonia (Ohio) — $26.2 million
  3. AIDS/LifeCycle (California) — $15.2 million
  4. BP MS 150 (Texas) — $14.7 million
  5. Rodman Ride for Kids (Massachusetts) — $12.4 million
  6. Bike 4 Chai (New York) —  $8.4 million
  7. Miami Dolphins Challenge (Florida) — $6 million
  8. Best Buddies Challenge (Massachusetts)  — $6 million
  9. Bike MS: City to Shore (Pennsylvania) —  $4.7 million
  10. Best Buddies Challenge (California) —  $4.5 million

“The Million Dollar Club list is a tremendous addition to our knowledge of the cycling fundraising space,” said David Hessekiel, president of the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum, which releases annual benchmarks of the top thirty US and Canada-based peer-to-peer fundraising programs. In 2017, five US cycling programs and six Canadian cycling programs made their respective top 30 lists.
